Sleep problems

Sleep disorders and their treatment

Sleep disorders can occur at any time in life and can have a variety of causes. These can range from physical to psychological problems, such as sleep apnea, pain, angina, indigestion, hormonal imbalances, or alcohol and drug abuse. On the psychological side, causes such as stress, depression, low mood, bipolar disorder, and trauma can contribute to sleep difficulties.

For milder sleep problems, a simple assessment of sleep habits and improved sleep hygiene can often be enough to alleviate the symptoms. It is common to experience temporary sleep difficulties during periods of stress or strain. Whether treatment is necessary depends on how severe the disorder is and how it affects the individual's everyday life. Sleep problems can manifest in different ways – from difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep during the night, to waking up undesirably early.

In some cases, medication may be appropriate to manage sleep problems, but it is important to keep this treatment as short as possible. Sleeping pills do not address the underlying causes of sleep problems, although they may provide relief. For some individuals, it can also be a challenge to stop using sleeping pills after long-term use.
