CBT for eating disorders and binge eating problems
Research has clearly shown that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment method for various eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and overeating. At Skepsis psychotherapy clinic, we offer treatment for binge eating disorder and overeating to help individuals manage and understand their eating in a more balanced way.
Binge eating and its challenges
Binge eating is characterized by episodes in which a person eats a much larger amount of food than is normal for most people in a short period of time (e.g., a couple of hours). During these episodes, many experience a loss of control, where they are unable to stop eating or regulate the amount of food they eat. The meals are often eaten alone and usually consist of fast carbohydrates. Afterwards, the individual may feel anxious, but temporary relief and relaxation may also be experienced.
Although binge eating is not accompanied by extreme compensatory methods such as vomiting, laxative abuse or diuretics, prolonged binge eating episodes can lead to weight gain, overweight or obesity, which in turn can give rise to even more anxiety, feelings of shame and negative self-image.
It is important to note that binge eating disorder is more common than many people think and is often associated with shame, which means it is not always discussed openly. Approximately one third of those affected are men or boys, and about half of clients are overweight. Despite its high prevalence, it is often an unspoken topic, but it is something that deserves attention and treatment.
This is a form of treatment that not only aims to relieve symptoms but also to provide tools to break negative thought patterns and regain control over eating, which can lead to long-term and sustainable change.
At Skepsis reception you can get:
- Psychoeducation and CBT for individuals
- Drug treatment and follow-up (in case of comorbidity)
