Treatment for ADHD

Treatment for ADHD

When you are diagnosed with ADHD, according to the recommendation of the National Board of Health and Welfare and the Medical Products Agency, you should have access to three different types of ADHD treatment. So-called multimodal treatment of ADHD.

Multimodal treatment in ADHD

Successful ADHD treatment is often based on a holistic approach, what is called multimodal treatmentThis form of treatment rests on three important pillars:

1. Psychoeducation – knowledge as a foundation

Psychoeducation is about gaining an understanding of what ADHD means – both in general and how it affects you specifically. You gain knowledge about how the ADHD brain works, which creates the conditions for developing effective routines and strategies in everyday life.

2. Cognitive aids – support in everyday life

Many people with ADHD benefit from assistive devices that make everyday life easier. This can include support for:

  • keep time
  • remember tasks
  • create structure in the day
  • take your medication regularly
  • manage stress, sleep, diet and physical activity

There are a variety of tools available – from mobile apps and schedules to reminder alarms, planning tools and special watches. The aim is to create clear routines and reduce everyday stress.

3. Drug treatment – relief of symptoms

ADHD medication can be an important support. The right medication can:

  • reduce restlessness and impulsivity
  • improve concentration
  • increase endurance
  • to even out the mood
  • contribute to a higher quality of life and better functional ability

The drugs are divided into two main groups, central stimulant (methylphenidate, lisdexamfetamine and non-central stimulant (atomoxetine, guanfacine).

How do you know that the medicine is working?

  • easier to focus and return to tasks
  • reduced impulsivity and more even mood
  • better endurance even during demanding or boring tasks
  • that it will be easier to get started

Side effects – what you need to know

Common side effects:
Dry mouth, decreased appetite, headache, anxiety/irritability, difficulty sleeping. These are usually transient and alleviate within a few days to weeks.

What do I do if I experience side effects?
If you experience bothersome side effects during the dose increase, you can go back to the previous dose until you see your doctor.

Serious side effects (rare):
If you experience depression or hyperactivity, you should pause the medication and contact your doctor immediately.

Set personal treatment goals

To be able to assess whether your treatment is working, it is a good idea to set up clear, realistic and measurable goalsExample:

  • Long-term goal: Get your daily routines in order within a year
  • Sub-goal: Create a functioning weekly schedule
  • Measurement: Keep a diary or use an app to track progress

Adaptations and support in everyday life

For adults with ADHD
You may be entitled to contributions via Social Services Act, such as:

  • contact person
  • housing assistance
  • personal support in everyday life

Psychotherapy as a complement
Although psychotherapy is not a core part of multimodal treatment, it can CBT be a valuable complement. You will then work on behaviors, thought patterns and skills that strengthen your long-term health and function.

What you can do yourself

If you have recently been diagnosed and you want to do something yourself to minimize your symptoms and reduce the need for medical care, you can start by:

  • set clear goals
  • create routines
  • use cognitive aids
  • read about your diagnosis
  • surround yourself with people who understand
